What must be done, Sir, will be done. When I was to begin publishing that paper, I was at a loss how to name it. I sat down last night upon my bedside, and resolved that I would not go to sleep till I had fixed its title. The Rambler seemed the best that occurred, and I took it.” – Dr. Johnson, quoted in Boswell’s Life of Johnson

“Johnson was, I think, not very happy in the choice of his title, The Rambler, which certainly is not suited to a series of grave and moral discourses; which the Italians have literally, but ludicrously, translated by Il Vagabondo; and which has been lately assumed as the denomination of a vehicle of licentious tales, The Rambler’s Magazine.” – Boswell, Life of Johnson

Fortunately, this will blog will not contain any ‘grave and moral discourses’ (or even, unfortunately, any licentious tales!)…. it’s just a space for me to ramble/rant in, about books, movies, music – the arts, generally. Or whatever else takes my fancy! (And a surprisingly large and random assortment of stuff does.) Fortunately ‘rambler’ just about sums up my aimless ruminating, so with thanks and tribute to Dr. Johnson, hello!

I’m a recent graduate, having just finished four years of English Literature at university (hence the pretensions to poesy, obsession with books, etc. etc.), and I am currently very aimless, jobless (and also, by extension, penniless). On the bright side, this gives me time to read, write, think, and update my blog. This is a good thing.

I particularly enjoy: reviewing/adoring books; taking faux-artistic (hipster?) photographs on my phone and splaying them online for people to see/condemn; pining after the romanticism of old Hollywood movies; pining after foreign lands; pining after things generally. I love the Internet; I like lists; and I like collecting lovely essays I come across, or equally, lovely thoughts I come across in my readings, and putting them on here. (All this adds up to… lots of lists of links to things…)

If for any reason you’d like to get in touch, feel free to email me at this address (click!)

Thanks for visiting!

AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies

I’ve decided to embark on a crazy little ‘project’/thing to keep myself amused – namely, watch all 100 movies on the AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies list and hopefully review as many of them as possible. Not  in the particular order they are listed in. You can access reviews/posts focused on these films on the ‘AFI 100 Years, 100 Movies’ page, or alternatively on the ‘Movies’ page (if you fancy sifting through all my junk on films what I been watchin’). If you are keen on hunting down particular films/sets of films, then look no further – I’ll be editing this page with a neat list of ’em.

It’s going to be a real doozy, but I’m having fun so far, so I hope you enjoy it too!

  1. Hello – since someone was nice enough to give me a Versatile Blogger Award (clearly he hasn’t met me), I feel duty bound to pass that on. Here’s the link, and if I’ve done this right it will explain everything in words which I have faithfully cut and pasted (thereby proving my versatility).
Whether or not you choose to follow this up (and it’s taken me, as a rookie, ages to do it) I do mean it, as I enjoy your blog very much.

Hey, really enjoyed reading your blog. I’m at Cambridge aka ‘the other place’ and also a lover of literature & travel although I chose not to do English (big regret!). Whereas I should be revising Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, I was searching analysis’ for Tender is the Night instead, for no apparent reason… hence stumbling upon your blog!

Great writing, please keep it up :) You have a fan.
